Zakat maal is an obligation that comes directly from the Quran — not merely a recommendation, but the fourth pillar of Islam. Unfortunately, many Muslims own wealth above the nisab but do not yet know how to calculate it correctly. This guide answers everything — from the scriptural evidence to the latest 2026 numerical simulations.
The Scriptural Basis for Zakat Maal
From the Quran
خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا
Khudz min amwaalihim shadaqatan tuthahhiruhum wa tuzakkiihim bihaa
"Take from their wealth a charity to cleanse and purify them." (Source: QS. At-Taubah: 103)
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ
"And establish the prayer, give zakat, and bow with those who bow." (Source: QS. Al-Baqarah: 43)
From the Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ — "Islam is built upon five pillars: the testimony of faith, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj for those who are able." (Source: HR. Bukhari no. 8, Muslim no. 16)
Understanding of the Salaf Scholars
- Imam Ibn Qudamah (Al-Mughni): Scholars unanimously agree that zakat is an individual obligation (fardhu ain) upon every Muslim whose wealth reaches the nisab and has completed one haul.
- Imam Al-Shafi'i (Al-Umm): Zakat is the right of the poor that Allah has established in the wealth of the rich.
- Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal: Zakat is obligatory on wealth that grows or has the potential to grow — including gold, silver, livestock, and trade goods.
What Is Zakat Maal?
Zakat maal is zakat on wealth owned by a person — covering savings, time deposits, cash, gold, silver, shares, mutual funds, and receivables expected to be returned.
The Two Mandatory Conditions for Zakat Maal
- Nisab: Wealth must reach the minimum threshold of 85 grams of gold. Based on the gold price in March 2026 of approximately IDR 2,772,000/gram, the 2026 nisab is ±IDR 235,620,000.
- Haul: The wealth has been owned for a full Hijri year (354 days).
Both conditions must be met simultaneously. Owning wealth above the nisab but for only 6 months is not yet obligatory. Having held it for a year but below the nisab is also not yet obligatory.
Important
Assets Included in the Zakat Maal Calculation
- Bank savings and time deposits
- Stored cash
- Stored gold and silver (excluding jewellery worn daily)
- Shares and mutual funds
- Receivables expected to be returned
- Other productive assets
Zakat Maal Rate and Simulation for 2026
The zakat maal rate is 2.5% of total net wealth.
- Savings: IDR 150,000,000
- Time deposit: IDR 100,000,000
- Stored gold 50g: IDR 138,600,000
- Total wealth: IDR 388,600,000 → zakat is obligatory
- Zakat maal: 2.5% × IDR 388,600,000 = IDR 9,715,000
