FAQ

Zakat maal is calculated on total wealth held for a full year (haul), including savings, investments, and liquid assets. Professional income zakat is calculated from income received monthly or yearly and does not require waiting for haul.

Included are productive and liquid assets: cash, savings, deposits, stock/mutual-fund investments, receivables expected to be collected, and digital assets like crypto. Your primary residence, personal-use vehicles, and daily necessities are not included.

Haul is the condition that wealth has been owned and held for at least one Hijri year (±354 days). If you only accumulated the wealth 6 months ago, zakat is not yet obligatory—you need to complete one full year.

Yes. The value of stocks, mutual funds, and other investments is calculated based on their market value when haul is reached. If total wealth exceeds nisab, 2.5% of that investment value must be paid.

Zakat maal is paid when haul is fulfilled—usually counted from the date your wealth first reached nisab. Many people choose Ramadan to make it easier to remember, but it can be paid any time after haul.

Complete Guide to Zakat Maal 2026: What’s Included, Nisab, and How to Pay

What is zakat maal?

Zakat maal literally means 'wealth zakat'. It is the obligation to pay 2.5% of wealth that has reached nisab and been held for a full year. Zakat maal is one of the eight commonly known types of zakat after zakat fitrah.

Which assets must be zakated?

Not all wealth is included. What’s counted is productive, growth-oriented wealth: savings, deposits, investments (stocks, mutual funds, bonds, sukuk), significant cash, receivables expected to be collected, and valuable digital assets.

Assets not counted: primary residence, operational vehicles, household furniture, clothing, and daily consumables.

How to calculate zakat maal

Step 1: Calculate the total of all assets that fall into the zakatable category.

Step 2: Check whether the total has reached the nisab (≈ Rp 161.5 million in 2026).

Step 3: Make sure the wealth has met haul (held for a full 1 year).

Step 4: Pay 2.5% of the total wealth as zakat.

Example: Total wealth Rp 200,000,000 → zakat = Rp 5,000,000.
