FAQ

Agriculture zakat applies to staple crops that can be stored: rice, corn, wheat, sorghum, and similar. Fruits like dates and grapes have separate rulings. Vegetables and crops that spoil quickly generally are not included.

Different rates reflect production costs. Rain-fed crops (free water from Allah) are charged 10% because there is no irrigation cost. Crops that require paid irrigation (pumps, paid water channels) are charged 5% because of the production costs already incurred.

No. Agriculture zakat does not require haul—it is paid immediately after each harvest. If you harvest three times a year, there are three zakat obligations (as long as each harvest reaches nisab).

Nisab is calculated from the physical harvest weight (653 kg), not from its monetary value. Once the weight reaches nisab, you may convert it to money to pay—using the market price at harvest time.

What is agriculture zakat?

Agriculture zakat is the obligation to give a portion of harvest for Muslim farmers whose production reaches nisab. It is one of the oldest forms of zakat in Islam—explicitly mentioned in the Qur’an (QS. Al-An'am: 141) as the obligation to give its due at harvest time.

What makes agriculture zakat unique

Unlike zakat maal or professional income zakat which is calculated yearly, agriculture zakat is paid every harvest—sometimes three or four times a year for productive farmers. It is also the only zakat with variable rates (5% or 10%) depending on irrigation method.
