FAQ

Yes. Zakat is calculated based on the stock’s market value when haul is reached—not when you sell. Even if you have an unrealized loss, the value is still based on the market price at that time.

Mutual fund zakat is calculated from the Net Asset Value (NAV) of your units at haul. If NAV per unit × number of units exceeds nisab and haul is met, 2.5% of the total NAV is due.

There are two opinions: some scholars include dividends and gains in investment zakat (2.5%), while others categorize them as income under professional income zakat. The more cautious approach is to account for both.

Most contemporary scholars, including MUI, consider crypto held as an investment (not for day-to-day trading of goods) analogous to commodities, and thus included under zakat maal or investment zakat—if it reaches nisab and haul.

Investment Zakat 2026: Stocks, Mutual Funds, Crypto—How to Calculate

Why are investments subject to zakat?

In Islamic jurisprudence, productive wealth with the potential to grow is a primary category for zakat. Stock, mutual fund, and bond investments fall into this category—because the wealth is deployed to generate returns.

The difference between investment zakat and zakat maal

Technically, investment zakat is part of the broader zakat maal. For practical reasons, many zakat institutions and Islamic finance apps separate them so users can calculate more precisely by asset type.
