The Scriptural Basis for Trade Zakat
From the Quran
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنفِقُوا مِن طَيِّبَاتِ مَا كَسَبْتُمْ
"O you who believe, spend from the good things you have earned." (Source: QS. Al-Baqarah: 267)
Imam Ibn Abbas interpreted "maa kasabtum" to specifically include trade goods.
From the Hadith
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نُخْرِجَ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنَ الَّذِي نُعِدُّهُ لِلْبَيْعِ
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to pay zakat on goods we prepared for sale." (Source: HR. Abu Dawud no. 1562 — from Samurah ibn Jundub, may Allah be pleased with him)
Understanding of the Salaf Scholars
- Imam Ibn Qudamah (Al-Mughni): Scholars unanimously agree on the obligation of zakat on 'urudhul tijarah. Its nisab equals that of gold and silver.
- Imam Al-Shafi'i (Al-Umm): Anyone who turns their wealth over for trade must calculate the value of all their business assets.
- Imam Ibn Hazm (Al-Muhalla): Zakat is obligatory on all trade goods without exception.
What Is Included in the Trade Zakat Calculation?
- (+) Trade inventory: Valued at current market price at haul, not purchase price
- (+) Cash and business account balances
- (+) Trade receivables expected to be collected
- (−) Trade payables to suppliers
Fixed assets such as machinery, operational vehicles, and business premises are not included in the trade zakat calculation.
