FAQ
Professional income zakat is zakat paid from income earned through professional work—whether employee salary, freelance fees, or service business income. It becomes obligatory when income reaches nisab within a period (monthly or yearly).
The rate is 2.5% of net income—income after deducting basic needs and primary obligations such as installments, BPJS, and tax.
It can be paid every month when you receive your salary (most disciplined) or accumulated and paid once a year. Both are valid according to most scholars.
Yes. As long as your freelance income reaches nisab within one year, the obligation applies—not only to full-time employees.
You can pay through BAZNAS, a trusted LAZ, your local mosque’s zakat program, or directly to eligible recipients (mustahiq) you know.
Complete Guide to Professional Income Zakat 2026: Nisab, Calculation, and How to Pay
What is professional income zakat?
Professional income zakat—or zakat on income—is zakat paid from professional earnings. Unlike zakat maal which is calculated on total wealth over a year, professional income zakat is calculated from income received monthly or yearly.
Its legal basis is derived from Qur’an Al-Baqarah: 267 and several contemporary ijtihad decisions, including MUI Fatwa No. 3 of 2003 which officially establishes zakat on income as an obligation for eligible Muslims.
Who must pay professional income zakat?
You are obligated if you meet two main conditions: you are Muslim, and your income in a year or month has reached nisab. There is no difference between permanent employees, contract workers, freelancers, or service entrepreneurs—as long as income meets the minimum threshold.
What is the nisab for professional income zakat in 2026?
There are two recognized scholarly opinions:
• Gold nisab: equivalent to the price of 85 grams of gold per year. With gold around Rp 1,900,000/gram, the nisab is ≈ Rp 161,500,000/year or Rp 13,458,000/month.
• Rice nisab: equivalent to 520 kg of rice per year. With rice ≈ Rp 12,500/kg, the nisab is ≈ Rp 6,500,000/month.
You may choose whichever opinion you believe, or follow guidance from a scholar/institution you trust.
How to calculate professional income zakat
The formula is simple: Zakat = Net income × 2.5%
Net income = Gross income minus basic needs and mandatory obligations (installments, BPJS, income tax).
Example: Salary Rp 10,000,000, BPJS + tax deductions Rp 600,000 → net income Rp 9,400,000 → zakat = Rp 235,000/month.
