The Scriptural Basis for Zakat Fitrah

From Authenticated Hadith

فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ، أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ obligated zakat fitrah as one sha' of dates, or one sha' of barley, upon every Muslim — slave and free, male and female, young and old." (Source: HR. Bukhari no. 1503, Muslim no. 984)

أَغْنُوهُمْ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ — "Spare them (the poor) the need to ask on this day (Eid al-Fitr)." (Source: HR. Daruquthni)

طُهْرَةٌ لِلصَّائِمِ مِنَ اللَّغْوِ وَالرَّفَثِ، وَطُعْمَةٌ لِلْمَسَاكِينِ — "(Zakat fitrah is) a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and food for the needy." (Source: HR. Abu Dawud no. 1609, Ibn Majah no. 1827)

Understanding of the Salaf Scholars

• Imam Al-Shafi'i (Al-Umm): Zakat fitrah is obligatory upon every Muslim who has a surplus of staple food for themselves and their family on the night and day of Eid al-Fitr.
• Imam Malik (Al-Muwaththa): One sha' of rice equals 2.5 kilograms according to the Madinah scholars' measurement held by the majority.
• Imam Ibn Taymiyya (Majmu' Fatawa): It is permissible to pay zakat fitrah in cash if that is more beneficial to the recipient, particularly in urban areas.

Payment Deadlines

1. Beginning of Ramadan until the eve of Eid: permitted, and this is recommended so amil zakat can distribute on time
2. Eve of Eid until before dawn on Eid al-Fitr: the primary time (obligatory)
3. After dawn until before the Eid prayer: still valid, but less preferred
4. After the Eid al-Fitr prayer: no longer accepted as zakat fitrah — becomes ordinary voluntary charity
