The Scriptural Basis for Zakat on Gold and Silver
From the Quran
وَالَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ يَوْمَ يُحْمَى عَلَيْهَا فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ
"And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah — give them tidings of a painful punishment. On the day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell..." (Source: QS. At-Taubah: 34-35)
From Authenticated Hadith
لَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسِ أَوَاقٍ صَدَقَةٌ — "There is no zakat on silver less than five uqiyah." (Source: HR. Bukhari no. 1405, Muslim no. 979)
Five uqiyah = 200 dirhams of silver = 595 grams of silver — the nisab for silver that applies to this day.
فِي الرِّقَةِ رُبُعُ الْعُشْرِ — "On silver, the zakat is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%)." (Source: HR. Bukhari no. 1454)
The zakat letter of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq: وَفِي كُلِّ عِشْرِينَ مِثْقَالًا نِصْفُ مِثْقَالٍ — "On every twenty mithqals of gold, the zakat is half a mithqal." (Source: HR. Abu Dawud no. 1567 — gold nisab 20 mithqals = 85 grams)
Scholars' Views on Nisab and Jewellery
- Imam Ibn Qudamah (Al-Mughni): Scholars unanimously agree the gold nisab is 20 mithqals (85 grams) and silver nisab is 200 dirhams (595 grams).
- Imam Al-Shafi'i, Malik, and Ahmad: Gold jewellery worn by women in a normal manner is not subject to zakat.
- Imam Abu Hanifa and Ibn Hazm: Gold jewellery remains subject to zakat without exception.
