If you have a regular income — whether as an employee, a civil servant, or a freelancer — there is a good chance you are already obligated to pay income zakat every month. But many people are still unsure: when does the obligation begin, and how much must be paid?
This guide explains the calculation with concrete examples, including a simulation for a monthly salary of IDR 5 million.
What Is Income Zakat?
Income zakat (zakat profesi) is zakat levied on earnings derived from work or a profession — employee salary, civil servant remuneration, consultant fees, or income from any other skill. Its legal basis refers to MUI fatwas and the Ministerial Regulation on Religion.
What Is the Nisab for Income Zakat?
There are two nisab methods in use:
- Gold nisab (85 grams): Approximately IDR 235 million per year, or ±IDR 19.6 million per month (based on gold price in March 2026 ≈ IDR 2.77 million/gram)
- Rice nisab (524 kg): Approximately IDR 3–5 million per month depending on local rice prices
The majority of contemporary scholars and Indonesian zakat institutions use the rice nisab for monthly income zakat because it is more accessible to the broader public.
Note
What Is the Zakat Rate?
The income zakat rate is 2.5% of net income. There are two common approaches:
- From gross salary: 2.5% × total salary before any deductions
- From net salary: 2.5% × (salary − monthly basic needs)
Simulation: Monthly Salary of IDR 5 Million
- Monthly salary: IDR 5,000,000
- Monthly rice nisab: ±IDR 3,500,000
- Status: Exceeds nisab → zakat is obligatory
- Income zakat: 2.5% × IDR 5,000,000 = IDR 125,000/month
- Per year: IDR 125,000 × 12 = IDR 1,500,000
If using the gold nisab (±IDR 19.6 million/month), a salary of IDR 5 million is not yet obligated for monthly income zakat. You can accumulate annual income first and calculate once the total exceeds the annual nisab.
Note on gold nisab
Simulation for IDR 7 Million and IDR 10 Million Salaries
- Salary IDR 7,000,000: 2.5% × 7,000,000 = IDR 175,000/month (IDR 2,100,000/year)
- Salary IDR 10,000,000: 2.5% × 10,000,000 = IDR 250,000/month (IDR 3,000,000/year)
When Should Income Zakat Be Paid?
- Monthly: paid each time salary is received — the most practical and recommended approach
- Annually: accumulated first, then calculated at the end of the Hijri year or during Ramadan
Are Freelancers Also Required to Pay Income Zakat?
Yes. Income zakat is not limited to salaried employees. Freelancers, consultants, content creators, and anyone who earns income from a skill or service is also obligated if their earnings exceed the nisab.

Conclusion
Income zakat is obligatory once your earnings exceed the nisab — whether the rice or gold nisab. For a salary of IDR 5 million using the rice nisab, the zakat is approximately IDR 125,000 per month. Small, yet this obligation carries great impact when fulfilled consistently.
